Brexit is leading to a spike in warehousing requests

Brexit has caused a lot of uncertainty for many industries, but it seems that the warehouse industry is experiencing an increased demand. One of the leading freight forwarders in the UK has reported seeing a large increase in warehousing requests – and apparently most of the requests are linked to Brexit.

Davies Turner, the leading freight forwarders in the UK, has seen a spike in requests for warehouse space, and they believe this is driven by concerns about the outcome of the current Brexit negotiations.

Requests from across Europe

Many of the requests for warehouse space have come from outside of the UK, from companies across Europe, but it has come at a surprising time. This is because most warehouse owners experience less demand in the New Year, as retailers use less stock after the festive season. But the beginning of 2018 saw an increase in requests – and it is likely that this trend will continue into 2019.

This could be positive news. After all, Brexit has created uncertainty for many companies, leaving them worried about future business, but it appears that the uncertainty is benefitting UK warehouse owners.

A boom in business

One of the managers at Davies Turner suspects that the uncertainty surrounding Brexit will lead to even more demand for storage space in the UK, especially short term storage. This is a plan that will be useful if there is an unsatisfactory outcome from Brexit negotiations (for example, if there are no suitable trading agreements in place).

Another surprise factor is the Chinese New Year, which will start in January 2019. Davies Turner suspects that this will see an increased demand for warehouse space that will last until March. So if you own a warehouse and you rent out space it could be worth working with companies outside of the UK – especially if you have lots of extra space!

Brexit may have caused a lot of uncertainty for many industries, but it seems that this is a mix of both bad news and good news. After all, the warehouse industry is currently thriving – but this could change in the future when negotiations are complete.
